For indie and underground music fans, CMJ Music Marathon was NYC’s best way to experience live music from emerging artists and bands, starting in 1980. We were lucky enough to design the festival identity one year before they pivoted the event away from the original week-long, multi-venue format.
CMJ needed to create a design package that would telegraph the DIY ethic of the indie music community.
CMJ needed to create a design package that would telgraph the DIY ethic of the indie music community. Working within a very tight schedule, we conceived an approach based on the contrast between a clean, modern typeface and colorful, glitchy backgrounds crafted with a combination of analog and digital techniques. We delivered a new logo, design toolkit, and style guide that was built to empower the CMJ team to produce all collateral including posters, print ads, badges, and their new app and website.
